Yes Simon, Greenwood not Rothampstead Park!
Simon travelled in record time to be part of a match that had everything: run outs, dropped catches, LBW controversies, great bowling. It led the FCC captain to comment: "this was real cricket - can we play again in September"
This was all occasioned by the match being 8-a-side, and Captain Michael negotiating an 'as many overs as you like' deal.
Graham and Tim opened for the Dads; however, FCC had a very fast bowler who restricted the guys to running quick singles. But they were gradually getting their eyes in as Graham drove off his front foot for 4, and then he cuts for another. Tim was getting into his stride but was unluckily finding the fielders. Graham cuts for another 4, but the grass in the outfield was so long that good shots were held up for ones and twos.
Graham retires and Michael, just in, completes a risky single. Then Tim drives for 4 and repeats it. Michael flat smashes the fasty for 4 and Tim hooks for 4.
This is good Dads scoring in the face of accurate bowling.
Tim is bowled off a very good ball so Simon in. Michael paddles a 4, and then hits some twos before being bowled. Jacob joins Simon.
Jacob is caught well and Simon was bowled off a smart one.
In the scramble for runs towards the end Roger and Jonno kept the scoreboard ticking over with good and occasional madcap, running.
Roger was unluckily bowled by one that kept high which brought Stauvers in who drove for 4 and continued running with Jonno, eventually running Jonno out.
Dads reach a total of 87 hard fought runs.
The Dads had their own bowling arsenal consisting of Tim, Jacob and Jonno - blxxdy hxll these guys got better with every ball - don't believe me, look at their figures. And this was against good batters.
Tim profited from a catch in the deep by Stauvers; unfortunately he had dropped an identical ball whilst fielding as a substitute for FCC, the result: ironic comments by FCC in the pub afterwards congratulating Stauvers on such a good catch.
Kudos to Graham for just missing a diving effort behind the sticks, whilst suffering pulled muscles, tendonitis and a variety of other ailments. Also, good fielding from the FCC substitutes, one stopping a quick run in the covers, flipping the ball back to Tim who pirouetted to backhand the bails off for a run out. Another returning a flat throw to Graham who didn't just take the bails off but smashed down all three stumps for another run out.
Jacob, approaching unplayable status, gave the Dads a chance with two unplayable rip snorting consecutive clean bowled wickets. Then Tim bags an LBW, but no, after being given out the batter (one of the openers) is called back by a sporting Dads side declaiming that "it wasn't plumb enough".
On came Jonno, whose accuracy, laced with an occasional beamer, brought forth the only maiden over of the match.
Brave, brave bowling at the death from Michael and Simon made it a nail bitter. Michael, varying his flight, almost inducing a caught and bowled. Simon hitting the top of the bails for a nice clean bowled, then caused the batsmen to hit numerous skiers, however, they all fell in-between fielders, surely the Gods were against the Dads which proved to be the case as FCC reached the winning total with only one ball to go. Sigh!
