20 Over Match vs Alvin's Allstars

26th July 2016 at Verulam Park

Alvin's Allstars won by 8 runs

This was a match that the Saddoes threw away to leave them with four straight losses against Alvin's. With four overs left and plenty of wickets in hand the Sads needed just 22 runs for victory, but contrived to lose momentum and wickets at an alarming rate to end up 8 runs short.

After winning the toss the Saddoes took to the field and Wilson was thrown the ball to start the match. Skipper Jones was rewarded for this risky strategy when Wilson managed to bowl both openers. He did get some help from the batsmen, however, who were both Aussie ringers, and in a manner reminiscent of our own antipodean contingent, were not intent on hanging around. Both swung the bat wildly with heads in the air and all it took was a couple of straight deliveries to dispatch them. This, however, brought in "Sam", the best player on the Alvin's team who promptly hit his first ball to the long off boundary. At the other end Hollerton was bowling a typically tight line but also conceded a couple of boundaries to Sam. Hollerton's persistence got its reward at the end of his spell when the ball was hit in the air towards cover where McKinnon took a fine running catch with the ball coming from over his shoulder.

Unfortunately it was not Sam who was dismissed, and he hung around to punish the bowling of Church (who was hit for 5 boundaries) and to a lesser extent, McKinnon. The Saddoes breathed a sigh of relief when Sam retired on 36 with the score on 67 for 3 after 8 overs. From then on the scoring rate slowed remarkably as the less able batsmen were kept in check by tight bowling and the fielders were put under less pressure and so made fewer mistakes. Knee & Diprose were particularly frugal, and both gained wickets with the help of Pointer behind the stumps, the former inducing a stumping and the latter getting some extra bounce and finding the edge for a well-taken catch. Curtis applied more pressure and was difficult to get away. Evershed and Winfield continued the theme, both gaining wickets from catches and conceding only 5 and 6 runs respectively from their two overs. Winfield impressively bowled a wicket maiden for the 17th over. Skipper Jones was also economical, particularly in the last over which only went for 3 runs.

What looked like being a demanding total halfway through the innings ended up as a very gettable 114.

Jones and Diprose opened the batting and made steady progress until Jones, trying to push the score along, went for a run after hitting the ball towards mid off. He reached the other end only to find Diprose standing his ground and was run out by the length of the pitch. Whether a run was possible was still being debated long afterwards in the pub, but the direct hit from the fielder would have made it much harder for the non-striker to make his ground.

In came the form batsman of the season, Knee, who started in pedestrian fashion with a handful of singles (which mostly went straight to the more energetic fielders) before launching several his trademark boundaries. After being caught on the brink of retirement he was replaced by the hobbling Church who continued to enjoy himself before being bowled by one of Alvin's young ringers. All the while Diprose was accumulating runs at a steady rate, and on retirement he had built a platform from which the Sads expected to go on and win the game. However, a flurry of wickets stunted their progress: Winfield bowled by the ever-present Sam after a bright start to his innings; Wilson caught by, yes, Sam running to his right at square leg; McKinnon through his shot before the ball arrived and bowled by the slowest of slow bowlers. It fell to Curtis and Pointer to try to steer the Saddoes home in failing light and against accurate young bowlers, but it was not to be.

There were one or two grumbles afterwards about a couple of the better bowlers sending down three overs each and fielders being over the boundary when the ball was bowled, but the Saddoes should not have got themselves into the position where these became an issue. The 20/20 season therefore ends with 6 losses and 6 wins, and a desire to finally get back to winning ways against Alvin's next year.
