The outcome of some matches are said to rest on fine margins and this was one of them. What if Simmers didn't hit the last ball of the innings for 6? What if Dippers had been made to re-bowl his no-ball in the last over? However, these 'what ifs' are all moot as Saddos' winning streak continues with a fine win against a very good STAGS side in a match played in good spirits.

A tosser of the highest calibre, skipper Peelers calls correctly and chooses to bat and turns to Corporal Jonesers who conveniently has the batting order to hand.

In conditions suited to swingers, out steps Peelers and Paulers - the latter looking to start where he left off last week. A boundary per over sees the run rate steady rather than rapid when Paulers decides to hit a juicy full toss to the only fielder in front of the bat on the leg side. A repeat of Mr Angry scenes from last year are quickly averted. Bonders strides out purposefully at number 3. His purpose being to invent a new shot to get out - the backwards paddle scoop off the hip to be caught at slip.

An elevation up the order for Pointers appears to give him altitude sickness - he's never been this high up before. While he swats and swishes, Peelers at the other end is triggered out LBW by a generous Simmers. In walks Dippers with his high elbow and flowing cover drive, and opens his account with a six. A few fours and another six later Dippers retires.

Pointers meanwhile holds up an end and regains his composure forming a handy partnership with McKinners, before finally missing a straight one. Next man in is Winners who starts promisingly but is bowled by an exact replay of The Ball of the Century, at least that's what Winners says. Colin follows to a smartly juggled catch in the outfield in the same over. Saddos staring down the barrel at 84/6 in the 13th over.

Glenners walks out join Simmers with words of encouragement from the manager ringing in his ears, and soon the run rate increases. Both batsmen score freely, Glenners in particular in punishing mood. Glenners finally holes out attempting another six and Chenners walks in at 114/7 in the 15th. Chenners soon walks out replaced by Jonesers whose brief cameo allows Simmers to keep the scoreboard ticking. Jonesers departure sees the return of Dippers for the final over where Simmers smites the last 2 balls of the innings for a four and a six. Saddos close on 146/9; a good effort on a sporting pitch in bowler friendly conditions.

Paulers and Winners take the new ball and keep the STAGS openers in check - Paulers opening with a maiden. Glenners and Neal follow, keeping the scoring well below the asking rate and Glenners making the breakthrough, castling the opener. Next into the fray is Pointers' yin to Chenners' yang. While Chenners is treated somewhat disdainfully by the STAGS man fasting for Ramadan, Pointers weaves a spell with his super slow loopers to return outstanding figures of 2/10, with both wickets coming from the last two balls of his spell.

With STAGS requiring 70 off the last eight overs, Peelers turns to Bonders and Jonesers. Despite Bonders' long run causing ripples of nervousness among the batsmen to come, STAGS keep within touching distance of the required rate. 36 required off the last 4 overs with the skipper temporarily at a loss as to who has bowled and who hasn't. After some deliberation the ball is tossed to McKinners whose first over gets the vital wicket of the STAGS skipper despite costing 11. He then provides a masterclass in death over bowling in the 19th, costing only two runs and peppered with dot balls, it swings the balance in Saddos' favour.

So it's Dippers to bowl the last with 17 required to win. In the fading light, he decides bowling short and quick is the way to go; greeted with chunters of disapproval by the STAGS on the sidelines.

A wicket is taken, a no-ball is hit for six and 10 is taken off the last over leaving STAGS 7 short on 140 - close but no cigar.

In the confusion, the umpires (and for that matter everybody else) forget that an extra ball should have been bowled for the no-ball in the last over.

Perhaps in the re-match we can bowl them an extra ball.
