30 Over Match vs Ramsbury CC

16th July 2017 at Membury

Ramsbury CC won by 2 wickets

"Strewth Robbo. This place has just run out of Glenlivet" Glenno said. Or would have said if he'd been able to speak. It was 1.30am and the Wokey Hole Social Club was still rocking with jukebox in full flow. "And so the mother turned around and the son went down" the Human League almost sang.
So started the second day of tour with the last men standing(ish) Winfield and Roberts supporting the two thirsty Southern Hemisphere pool sharks.

After a brief and largely ineffective sleep, and with our arteries full of the finest grease that the Wokey Hole breakfast had to offer it was off to our second game.

It was at this stage that I realised I was a) still quite drunk and b) meant to be in charge of the day's game. Peter Osmond my mate at Ramsbury CC is a top chap but organisational skills were never his forte at university. It was with more that a little trepidation that I received Rupert's message: "nice ground but no sign of the oppo".
Nice ground it was and so were the oppo who kindly offered us first use of a track that made the supershitedome look, well, not shite.

With the order reversed from the previous day WG opted for voluntary nets/bombardment of unwary team mates and duly strode out to bat with Michael. What followed bore little resemblance to the previous day's batting but was strikingly familiar to those students of Saddo batting.
WG perished cheaply, as did Rupert who was left to reflect on the merits of the long drive that morning after the briefest of visits to the crease.
Glenno was in the mood and swung the bat lustily. So focused was he that he turned down a mid innings beer in favour of water. Whatever next - maybe a salad? General confusion/pisspoor preparation over the retirement rules led to Glenno retiring at 30 bringing debutant Lee to the wicket. He looked the part and brought hope of a Sados revival. Alas we were soon reduced to 46 for 5 with
Curtis, Pointer, Winfield and Wilson falling cheaply. Peel hit what he thought was a definite 6 only to see a scrambling catch inches from the boundary. Shaun carried on where he had left off with 2 pints and a bore wurst (surely elegant batting from the previous evening?) and retired bringing 12th man Roberts to the crease. After initial difficulty seeing the ball, a brief rally scrambled us to 112 all out after only 25 overs of our allotted 30.

Tea was taken - an interesting combo of samosas, home make cakes and battenberg and as hard as we tried to push the leftover keg of 3 Brewers on the oppo they were either as hungover as we were or too focused on getting home at a reasonable hour.

Michael and Lee took the opening overs. Lee looked impressive with some decent pace and induced a false shot which hit Roberts on the arm taking evasive action at gully. With a low score to defend it was imperative we got off to a good start. We didn't. Rupert and WG however bowled tidily. Curtis threw himself around in the field and off his own bowling to comic effect. Peel even threw himself on the ball at one stage.

Winfield replaced WG at the top end and found an edge into the woks of Pointer. Wilson started a parsimonious spell from the lower end holding a beautiful line and length completely bamboozling their middle order. On came Cooper from the top end and produced another catch into the iron mits of Pointer.
HANG ON!!
This was getting close. All thoughts of hangovers, lack of sleep and that 3rd poo I so desperately needed disappeared. They were 8 down and still 20 short.
The Sado values of tenacity, athleticism and sheer gameship were to the fore as Pointer once again put his studs through the ball. Whether this produced the reverse swing for Glenno for the beauty that cleaned up their young keeper we'll never know. I'm sure Glenno doesn't.
9 down (albeit with one retired) and it was a big ask of the Sados with only 15 required off 5 overs. Roberts lumbered in from the lower end to his old uni mate who hit a tough chance to Michael. Roberts's smorgasbord then went for 10 of the 15 required leaving Glenno and Graham an impossible task. Particularly as their number 11 played for Glos u19 in his day!

We got close and ended the tour on a high. A lovely location with cricket being played in exactly the right spirits (Glenmorangie, Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Glenno!!)...

Thanks to all for a lot of fun and some half decent cricket.
