20 Over Match vs Killigrew25th July 2012 at Verulam ParkKilligrew won by 8 wickets As the clock struck six, the five assembled Dads looked across at a 10 man Killigrew squad, keenness personified. Eventually parity in numbers was achieved by Dads fielding two youngsters, Jacob Winfield and Harry Knil-Jones plus Matt, borrowed from Killigrew, back after a serious illness.
Captain Tim Winfield decided the batting order as Killigrew took to the field. The Knill-Jones's opened the batting, Andy and son Harry. The bowling started, as it was to continue, accurate and searching. Andy, after playing himself in, fell to a good catch. Harry, playing with a straight bat (take note Andy) did not give any chances and kept the scoreboard ticking.
Michael Jones, next in, put bat to ball but was eventually caught. The Killigrew fielding was as keen as their bowling. Stauvers next in edged a skier that was pouched. Apparently his bat, the same one that Roger Barton used, was split. However, this was only pointed out to both of them AFTER the game!?!
Harry retired after a super knock. Now some middle order shoring up was required which was thankfully delivered by Peter Church and Tim, with three and two fours respectively, two of which cleared fielders in the deep. Peter Cook, erstwhile doyen of Dads cricket, volunteered to do umpiring duty, giving us a slight break.
Peter retired, making way for Richard who cut and drove well from the off. Tim was bowled by off-spin bringing in Jacob who proceed to play correctly (take note Tim) and sprint between the wickets at blazing speed. Richard ran well with Jacob but was run out off a good throw. Jacob swept well but would have scored more, as would Harry, if they could have reached the kicking balls coming at them from a great height. Roger, batting next, manfully took up the sprinting challenge, charging between the sticks with Jacob - had he been watching too many Olympic film clips?
Simon Wilson scored runs at the death taking us to 84 from 20 overs.
This low score was not a result of poor batting but of consistently tight bowling. On enquiry we found that most of the Killigrew team also played league cricket - and it showed.
Jacob opened the Dad's bowling, running in with pace and purpose. Matt, on at the other end, improved with every ball. Andy was unlucky not to take a wicket in both of his overs. Peter C bowled two good overs, one of which was a maiden. The bowling was good but there was a dawning realization that Killgrew could bat as well. No wickets had fallen as their openers defended patiently whilst putting way any poor balls. One of the openers retired. Tim and Richard took up bowling duty. Tim struck, clean bowling an opponent. Richard, bowling good length flippers, was unlucky as Harry, keeping wicket with lightening reflexes, attempted stumpings but the batters just survived.
Captain Tim, throughout the Killigrew innings, was calling in vain for the fielders to move in. The result: six potential catches falling short of fielders. Tim's philosophy of going for it was proving to be correct.
Simon bowled accurate skidders and Michael took a good wicket off his third ball. But it wasn't enough. Despite sound bowling from every Dad concerned, Killigrew reached the target in 13 overs
